Lysko Wins Burke Cup!

Prince’s Court welcomed players from Boston (Connors & Stockton), New York (Ziatyk), and from parts unknown (Bender) to the USCTA Level Championships for players with a handicap of 40-49, The Burke Cup.  It became quite clear from the first match of the tournament that William Connors (affectionately dubbed “The Boston Strong Boy” by Temple) routed a travel-weary Mike Ziatyk  and sent notice to the rest of the field that he was on a mission and would not be denied.  The question was, who would have the game to stop him?  Through many highly competitive matches over the course of the weekend, a challenger emerged, a Prince’s Court dark horse by the name of  Greg Lysko. Hufford Wins Price Cup

Hufford Wins The Price Cup

Steve Hufford fought off three match points and a spirited effort by “underdog-on-paper” Jim Zug last weekend to win the Price Cup 6/4 3/6 6/5.  Perhaps we can appeal to Mr. Zug’s loquacious side and get him to submit an eyewitness account?!?

Thank you very much for the Price Family for hosting this wonderful tournament!

Price Cup This Weekend!

The Price Cup at Prince's Court

The Price family are kindly hosting the honorable Price Cup this weekend at Prince’s Court.  The Price Cup is a Prince’s Court members only tournament for players handicap 20-40.  This is a level tournament and is a good test for these players to see how they stack up against their peers in the club.  Come check it out!  The field has been set and the schedule is as follows: Read the rest of this entry »

Washington in the Whitney Cup Final!

Washington defeated Philadelphia today 4 matches to 1 and earned a spot in Sunday’s Final.

It came down to the final match of the day to determine who our opponent would be.  New England had to win their Senior’s match against New York in straight sets to advance and they did 6-5, 6-3!  So it is deja vu all over again and a rematch of last year’s final.

10:00AM #4 pairs Kris Motz/Ryan Carey v. Shawn Herlihy/Jeff Horine on the West Court

11:00 AM #1 pairs Rich Moroscak/Steve Hufford v. Matt Porter/Jeremy Wintersteen on the East Court (start time follows prior match)

Riviere wins the 2009 National Open

DSC00710-1

by Vern Cassin
Camden Riviere took on Steve Virgona in the finals of the National Open at Prince’s Court.  Riviere got off to a quick start, taking the first set 6-2, while Virgona struggled to find his usual consistency.  But, as they say, “ask and you shall receive.”  Virgona found his usual skill in the second set, and the points and games got longer as both players returned seemingly impossible balls.
Ultimately, the war was won in the air.  Camden’s aim for the openings was near perfect, while Virgona’s forces sometimes clipped the sides of the dedans and grille.  The difference was enough.  The second set was a hard-fought 6-4 to Riviere, with many games going to deuce.  But Virgona flagged in the third set, and the match went to Riviere, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
This win followed Riviere’s defeat to Virgona in the British Open last month.   The match was available via online streaming on Prince’s Court’s website, and comments on the magnificent quality of play came in from New York, England, and Saudi Arabia.

Open-ing Day!

Friday kicks off at 10:30AM with some great doubles matches in the Pro-Am as the Pros team up with Prince’s Court Whitney Cup players.  Should be worth checking out.  Click here for the Pro-Am schedule.

Then the real action starts at 3PM with our own beloved Phil Shannon taking on Newport’s Rich Smith.  Followed by Head Professional Ivan Ronaldson trying to “back” into a win against Newport’s former head professional Josh Bainton.

The Cocktail Party (RSVP required) whets your whistle at 6PM with former Washington/NY professional Will Simonds taking on Newport’s senior professional Tony Hollins.  Followed by a match that will you seeing red, as two redheads Philly’s Barney Tanfield and NY’s Andrew Fowler battle it out for the no doubt increasingly rowdy spectators.

This should be good.

Now They’ve Dunn It!

They Dunn It!

Hoang/McCray Win The "C" Division

Prince’s Court sent a rather large envoy to the Jimmy Dunn Tournament in Philadelphia this past weekend as Temple counted 10 members along with countless other ex-pats.  Play was competitive all weekend and provided for entertaining viewing.  The big news is Vu Hoang and Jake McCray won the “C Division” in an epic 6/5 6/5 match against Shields/Yager!!  I believe this was their first time playing in the Jimmy Dunn, and now that they have Dunn it, can they do it again? Stay Tuned.
