Alastair Bradley Martin, one of the greatest amateur court tennis players of the twentieth century and a leader in both court tennis and lawn tennis, died on 12 January 2010. He was ninety-four.
Blond-haired, shy and energetic, A.B. Martin (he preferred A.B. to Alastair) was raised on the North Shore of Long Island. He first learned court tennis in the late 1930s from the legendary Punch Fairs, the English pro and former world champion. Fairs taught Martin the game at the Clarence Mackay court in Roslyn. Steve Hufford fought off three match points and a spirited effort by “underdog-on-paper” Jim Zug last weekend to win the Price Cup 6/4 3/6 6/5. Perhaps we can appeal to Mr. Zug’s loquacious side and get him to submit an eyewitness account?!?
Thank you very much for the Price Family for hosting this wonderful tournament!

The H.D.S. Boenning Award for Sportsmanship was given to Rich Moroscak at the USCTA Annual Dinner in New York this past weekend. It was the first time a Washington player has won the award. Well done , Rich!
Washington defeated Philadelphia today 4 matches to 1 and earned a spot in Sunday’s Final.
