Motz Doubles Up The 40s

John Motz didn’t let age get the better of him as he won the US40s Singles Championship 6-1 6-5 over a hobbled Bill Barker.  The finalists teamed up to take on Hufford/Zug in the Doubles Final.  Hufford and Zug got off to a blistering start taking the first set 6/1 to the surprise on the gallery.  However, Motz/Barker finally gained their second wind and in doing so gained the second set 6/5 in a tense final game.  The third set saw the momentum continue as Motz/Barker played with a champion’s confidence.  Motz doubled up his medal total by winning the doubles with Barker 1-6 6-5 6-1 .  A splendid display of tennis on a splendid Sunday.    The Finals were broadcasted live over the internet and the Finalists were awarded 40 oz. Budweisers at the end of the day to try to help in their post-match recovery.

Lysko Wins Burke Cup!

Prince’s Court welcomed players from Boston (Connors & Stockton), New York (Ziatyk), and from parts unknown (Bender) to the USCTA Level Championships for players with a handicap of 40-49, The Burke Cup.  It became quite clear from the first match of the tournament that William Connors (affectionately dubbed “The Boston Strong Boy” by Temple) routed a travel-weary Mike Ziatyk  and sent notice to the rest of the field that he was on a mission and would not be denied.  The question was, who would have the game to stop him?  Through many highly competitive matches over the course of the weekend, a challenger emerged, a Prince’s Court dark horse by the name of  Greg Lysko. By James Zug

Alastair Bradley Martin, one of the greatest amateur court tennis players of the twentieth century and a leader in both court tennis and lawn tennis, died on 12 January 2010. He was ninety-four.

Blond-haired, shy and energetic, A.B. Martin (he preferred A.B. to Alastair) was raised on the North Shore of Long Island. He first learned court tennis in the late 1930s from the legendary Punch Fairs, the English pro and former world champion. Fairs taught Martin the game at the Clarence Mackay court in Roslyn. Hufford Wins Price Cup

Hufford Wins The Price Cup

Steve Hufford fought off three match points and a spirited effort by “underdog-on-paper” Jim Zug last weekend to win the Price Cup 6/4 3/6 6/5.  Perhaps we can appeal to Mr. Zug’s loquacious side and get him to submit an eyewitness account?!?

Thank you very much for the Price Family for hosting this wonderful tournament!
