Twelve members competed on Sunday for the ladies doubles club championship, The Princess Cup. With honorary entrant Beth Curren supporting the players from the dedans, the ladies displayed the blend of competition and comraderie which makes our club unique. The handicaps of the entrants ranged from 33 to 101!
In the final, Sara Lacombe & Leslie Willard defeated Cecilia Forbes & Genie Gordon in a barnburner 8/7. Congratulations to all of our ladies!! Well done.
The court is back up and running after the floor was patched and a new coat of paint was applied. Big thank you to Ivan, Phil and President Hughey for making this happen! Who says you can’t Zamboni a court tennis court??

What a spectacular display of tennis!
First was the singles final between the awesome Aussies Mike Happell and Kieran Booth. It’s not very often that Princes Court gets to see “plus” handicap players, so this was quite a treat. Happell, who appeared to have trouble with his new surroundings (glass wall) yesterday, seemed quite at ease with the court and exhibited solid all-around play in the first set leaving Kieran to question himself and the court early and often. A closely fought first set, but it was veteran play by Happell which saw him through in the 5-all game and he took the set 6/5. It was at this point, that Booth knew he had to raise his level of play, and he did… in fact, both players did and you could hear the sound of many jaws dropping with each shot. Booth, through tenacious retrieval made Happell work for every point and this proved to be a good long term strategy as the “ol’ bones” seemed to get weary as the match went on. Happell fought every step of the way and did not make life easy for Booth and I think it was the heart of both players which will not be forgotten anytime soon. However, Booth was too strong in the end and through some laser like main wall boast, put himself in position to win and did just that. Congrats to Kieran Booth, the United States Amateur Singles Champion for 2011.
Booth def. Happell 5/6 6/4 6/5 6/2
Next, the doubles final. Could Prince’s own Bill Barker and Rich Moroscak muster up the mastery that led them to upset the #1 seeds the day before? Judging by the first few games, it looked like we were going to be in for a 5 hour match as each game seemed to take an eternity with many going to deuce, then ad, then back again. Pat Winthrop came out of the gates sharp with unwavering calm in the back court, sending back anything Bill and Rich would send his way. This led them to come good in the 1st set 6/3. Then, we were treated to the Ben Cook show. Ben started poaching and it seemed like no matter what shot Barker/Moroscak tried to hit past him, he would volley back for a winner. The dedans could not believe what they were seeing, and it kept happening over and over again. Matt Porter-esque and then some. Moroscak/Barker kept mustering small combacks to even the match but they just could never quite string the games they needed together. It looked like the upset win yesterday may have taken too much of a toll. Well played all around and those in attendance were all smiles after witnessing some superlative tennis (from AMATEURS no less)!
Winthrop/Cook def. Moroscak/Barker 6/3 6/4 6/3
